Erik Sikora – Wings of Motifs

Opening: 16. 7. 2026, 5 p.m.
Curator: Zuzana Janečková
Exhibition period: July 17, 2026 – September 15, 2026
Botanical Garden of UPJŠ, Mánesova 23, Košice

The exhibition Wings of Motifs presents the latest work of Košice-based multimedia artist Erik Sikora. It features an extensive series of watercolours in various formats, created especially for this exhibition at the Botanical Garden in collaboration with the East Slovak Gallery.

Most of the watercolours will appear to "grow" and climb throughout the Butterfly Greenhouse, a setting reflected in the exhibition's title. Like last year's project, this will be a two-venue exhibition: alongside the Botanical Garden, part of the series will also be installed within Moving Landscape in the courtyard of the East Slovak Gallery's main building. In both locations, the works will be exposed to challenging environmental conditions, including fluctuations in weather, temperature, and humidity.

Most of the watercolours will be mounted between sheets of glass, allowing them to be perceived as miniature greenhouses in their own right, while several works will remain in direct interaction with their surroundings.

Erik Sikora is best known for his videos, music, and performances. This time, however, he has immersed himself in painting—and is thoroughly enjoying it. The exhibition promises to be a true feast for the eyes and, because Erik is much more than just "Džumelec," it also offers a great adventure: a journey to the very heart of the watercolour.

The exhibition is organized by the East Slovak Gallery in collaboration with the Botanical Garden of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice.
