What do we hear when we listen to silence? And how do we imagine sound?
The exhibition showcases the projects of the finalists in the tenth annual A Knack for Art? art contest, part of an international educational platform dedicated to connecting young people and contemporary art. The projects on the theme of Sound and Silence were developed by groups of artists from high schools and grammar schools over the course of several months with the assistance of their teachers.
The theme chosen for this year’s contest opened up a wide range of possible reflections on two seemingly opposite phenomena which play such a major role in forming our perception of the world. Sound can be understood as both a physical phenomenon but also as an inner experience. Silence can lull us into a state of calm, but it can also evoke a sense of emptiness or unease. The works presented in the exhibition suggest that these conditions should not be perceived as separate quantities but as existing in an ever-shifting sense of tension across different meanings and situations.
The languages of music and the visual arts often intersect, and concepts such as rhythm and composition are common to both. The exhibition echoes this correlation, presenting a variety of artistic approaches and intermedia confluences which shift back and forth between the audio and the visual. The projects also oscillate between reflections on personal themes and wider social issues, exploring sensory experience, conceptual considerations and interactive engagement with the viewer. The works address the media of sound as a material which can be listened to (or not), deformed, translated or coalesced.
The A Knack for Art? platform has long formed a forum in which young people can nurture their interest in contemporary art, allowing them to experiment and develop their own opinions, and this exhibition gives them the opportunity to share their ideas with the general public. We would like to thank our partners and the cultural institutions who work with us; their support for the A Knack for Art? project ensures its continued activity. We are also grateful to the teachers who assisted and mentored the teams throughout the creative process.
