In the Oskár Čepan Award 2019’s final, five outstanding creative individualities with diverse approaches to the reflection on life and being meet. Some of them also formally tend to define themselves by globally oriented topics, while the others rather focus on introspection. As a result, both approaches intertwine—what can be perceived in a given context as a global matter is at the same time deeply intimate and what is internal is a projection of a universal topic, and vice versa.
The curator of the Oskár Čepan Award 2019’s exhibition is Václav Janoščík (CZ): "We live in a changeable age. We are exposed to a growing spectrum of problems overload—from war conflicts, ecological disasters, to populism, the crisis of one’s own identity and capacity of social understanding. Because of that, I am happy that all of this year’s finalists deal with broader social issues. I hope that together we will prove art not to be enclosed by its aesthetic topics and questions but, on the contrary, to represent an extremely necessary space, in which key problems open, increase their weightiness and accessibility.”
The finalists’ work is intermedial with a strong content. It can mutually communicate in one exhibition space and, at the same time, interpret its own stories and messages. "Communication" in general is a strong moment of this year’s Award. The performative interventions of some of the finalists - conceptually related to their presented works - will form a part of the exhibition opening.
