The exhibition named “Purchases, transfers, donation – new acquisitions 2020 – 2023” presents the latest additions to the collection of the East Slovak Gallery from the years 2020 – 2023. The name itself explains the means of acquiring new objects for the gallery’s collection. The exhibition aims to present to the public the results of long-term curatorial work that fulfils the gallery’s mission of building its collection and the acquisition strategy we have set ourselves as an institution. The years 2021 – 2023 were marked by the pandemic; our activities were moved online and the gallery was physically inaccessible to the public for several months. Despite this time, our curators were actively working to enhance the gallery’s collection. Building an art collection is a systematic work, which often requires several years of waiting, good argumentation, and field research. Over the last three years, with the financial support of the Košice Self-Governing Region and the Slovak Arts Council, we have managed to purchase works by contemporary artists as well as quality works of interwar modernism and 19th-century art. In today’s hectic times, we do not take for granted the donations of artists and owners of works of art, so we greatly appreciate that we can build our cultural heritage on the basis of understanding, willingness, and trust in the institution.
